Chicken Ingredients:
- 1 lb. chicken
- 1 cup cornstarch
- 1 cup flour
- 2 eggs
- Seasonings: salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika
- Neutral oil for frying
Chicken Directions:
- Cut chicken into bite sized pieces and season with seasonings.
- Mix cornstarch, flour, and seasonings.
- Whisk together eggs with seasonings.
- Bread the chicken – egg, then flour mixture – and set aside.
- Shallow fry the chicken at about 350° until the chicken reaches 165° and is crispy.
Sauce Ingredients:
- 1 cup orange juice
- ½ cup sugar
- 3 T sriracha
- 3 T coconut minos or soy sauce
- 2 T rice vinegar
- Seasonings: ginger, garlic powder, red pepper flakes
- 3 T cornstarch
- ¼ cup water
- 3 T orange zest
- Sesame seeds and green onions for topping, optional
Sauce Directions:
- Add all ingredients besides orange zest, cornstarch, and water into a sauce pan and heat on medium for about 10 minutes, whisking occasionally.
- Stir cornstarch and water together and slowly whisk it into the sauce, continue whisking for about 30 seconds, or until the mixture is fully combined with the cornstarch slurry.
- Add the orange zest, and keep on medium low heat for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Orange Chicken Directions:
- Toss the chicken in the sauce.
- Serve over rice and top with red pepper flakes, sesame seeds, and green onion.
Notes:
- Use jasmine rice and cook it according to package directions, but using the same amount of coconut milk as the package says water. This makes the rice sweeter, stickier, and softer. It also is great reheated as it doesn’t dry out even after a day or 2 in the fridge.
- You can use boneless, skinless chicken breasts, tenders, thighs, etc.
- You may need more of the cornstarch, flour breading mixture as you are breading.

I can’t lie, I think this might be one of my favorite recipes. I will never order orange chicken as takeout or at a restaurant again because no orange chicken compares. I usually make extras because I will crave it for days later and cannot get enough of it. This is always my boyfriend’s first request for lunch or dinner and it never gets old for either of us.
